Gilberto Calderon, conhecido como Joe Cuba nasceu em 1931 na cidade de New York. Se James Brown é conhecido como o PAI DO SOUL, Joe Cuba é conhecido como o PAI DO LATIN BOOGALOO. Seus pais emigraram de Puerto Rico nos anos 20 e como a maioria dos latinos, se estabeleu no Spanish Harlem, situado em Manhattan. Depois que Cuba quebrou um pé jogando " stickball" , começou a tocar conga. Em 1950, com 19 anos, tocou nos grupos J.Panama e La Alfarona X. Depois, Cuba foi para a faculdade estudar Direito. Durante um concerto de Tito Puente, entusiasmado e não se contendo em alegria, Cuba foi se apresentar a Tito e estabeleceu-se uma grande amizade. Este evento motivou Cuba a organizar sua própria banda. Em 1954, seu agente recomendou que mudasse o nome da banda para Joe Cuba Sextet, que se apresentou pela primeira vez no Stardust Ballroom. Em 1962, Cuba gravou “To Be With You” com os vocais de Cheo Feliciano e Jimmy Sabater. A faixa tornou-se popular na comunidade latina de New York. A letra da música de Cuba usava uma mistura de espanhol e inglês,
transformando-se uma parte importante do movimento “Nuyorican”. Em 1967, a banda havia incluido timbales, vibrafones, baixo e o piano entre seus instrumentos musicais, emplacando um “HIT” com a canção “Bang Bang” - uma canção que iniciou a era do Latin Boogaloo. Logo depois, gravou sua “obra prima”, a música “El Pito (I Never Go Back To Georgia)”. Nos anos 60, quando Joe Cuba e seu sexteto estavam em uma turnê, tiveram um problema na Geórgia, onde sofreram discriminação racial (assim como aconteceu com Ray Charles). Esta experiência inspirou-o a escrever a canção El Pito que inclui sua marca registrada, o assobio. Joe Cuba Sextet trabalhou durante os anos com muitos artistas, incluindo Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, James Brown e Judy Garland. Charlie Palmieri era seu diretor musical. Born "Gilberto Miguel Calderón" in the city of New York, Cuba's parents moved from Puerto Rico to New York City in the late 1920s and settled in Spanish Harlem, a Latino community located in Manhattan. After Cuba broke a leg when playing stickball, he took up playing the conga and continued to practice with the conga
between school and his free time. In 1950, when he was 19 years old, he played for J. Panama and also for a group called La Alfarona X. The group soon disbanded and Cuba enrolled in college to study law. While at college he attended a concert in which Tito Puente performed "Abaniquito". He went up to Tito and introduced himself as a student and fan and soon they developed what was to become a lifetime friendship. This event motivated Cuba to organize his own band. In 1954, his agent recommended that he change the band's name to the Joe Cuba Sextet and the newly named Joe Cuba Sextet made their debut at the Stardust Ballroom. The band became popular in the New York Latin community. The lyrics to Cuba's music used a mixture of Spanish and English, becoming an important part of the Nuyorican Movement.
In 1965, the Sextet got their first crossover hit with the Latin and soul fusion of "El Pito (I Never Go Back To Georgia)". The "Never Go Back To Georgia" chant was taken from Dizzy Gillespie's intro to the seminal Afro-Cuban tune, "Manteca". Jimmy Sabater later revealed that "none of us had ever been to Georgia". In 1967, his band which included timbales, vibraphones, and the piano among its musical instruments, scored a "hit" in the United States National Hit Parade List with the song "Bang Bang" - a song which ushered in the Latin Boogaloo era. Joe Cuba and his sextet have worked over the years with many artists, including: Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, James Brown and Judy Garland. Charlie Palmieri was his musical director. Joe Cuba and his sextet have sold millions of records over the years.
