Conforme prometido, "aluguei" um amigo e usei seu equipamento pra "ripar" e "escanear" os CD's do Papo Vázquez e do Arturo - meus presentes de aniversário que estou dividindo com vocês. Espero que gostem.

Hi, pals: this album has been recorded by the great pianist and band-leader Arturo O'Farril about ten years ago. It's a collector's item, very hard to find. As reported on Monday, I was given this CD as an anniversary present. (By the way: WHAT A GIFT!) Surprisingly, this is not a strictly "latin jazz" album. As a matter of fact it's much more close to "straight ahead jazz". Anyway, Arturo O'Farril, George Mraz and Steve Berrios deliver wondrously a very nice collection of "standards" and "bossa-nova" tunes. Hope u enjoy.

Arturo me contou que, aos 17 anos de idade, trabalhava como mensageiro em New York,
entregando correspondência de bicicleta. À noite tocava aqui e ali, onde houvesse vaga para um pianista. Num dia chuvoso, caiu da bicicleta, foi de encontro a um carro estacionado, machucou o joelho e bateu com o rosto no espelho lateral do veículo. Chorando de dor e sentindo-se o último dos seres humanos - moralmente arrasado e fisicamente ferido - decidiu que aquele seria o seu último lote de entregas. No dia seguinte ia pedir demissão daquele emprego miserável. Mas vejam só o que aconteceu: o destinatário de uma das cartas que estavam por ser entregues era nada mais nada menos que o grande MACHITO - amicissimo de seu pai e que o conhecia desde menino. Machito estava em New York de passagem, no final de uma temporada com sua "big-band". Quando reconheceu Arturo e tomado pela surpresa de ver o que ele fazia
para viver, decretou: "Parto de volta prá Los Angeles daqui há uma semana e vou levá-lo comigo, para tocar na minha orquestra". Assim foi feito e, pouco tempo depois, Machito passou o comando da banda para Arturo. (E ainda há quem duvide do destino...)

ARTURO O'FARRILL
Arturo was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Educated at the Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory, and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, Mr. O'Farrill played piano with the Carla Bley Big Band from 1979 through 1983. He then went on to develop as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, The Fort Apache Band, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte. In 1995 Mr. O'Farrill agreed to direct the band that preserved much of his father's music,
Chico O'Farrill's Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, which has been in residence at Birdland, New York City's famed nightclub, for the past nine years, as well as performing throughout the world as a solo artist and with his smaller groups.
Mr. O'Farrill has recently been appointed Assistant Professor of Jazz at The University of Massachussetts in Amherst. Throughout the past few years, Mr. O'Farrill has toured throughout the U.S. Europe and Asia. In the Spring of 2006, he led the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra on a tour of Mexico. Mr. O'Farrill lives in Brooklyn with his wife, classical pianist Alison Deane and their sons, Zachary and Adam.

MINHA OPINIÃO: quando Arturo gravou este CD, seu pai - Chico - ainda estava vivo. Talvez prá mostrar que seu universo musical vai muito além dos "montunos" e "guajiras" que toca há longos anos nas "afro-cuban-bands" por onde passou, Arturo exibe neste CD sua face de grande músico de jazz "straight ahead". Não por acaso, se fez acompanhar de dois expoentes em seus instrumentos: GEORGE MRAZ, contrabaixo e STEVE BERRIOS, bateria. O repertório é lindo, recheado de "standards" e "Jobins". Este foi outro grande presente de aniversário. Gracias, Maestro!
