Este foi o último álbum gravado pelo gigante CAL TJADER, pouco antes de sua morte. O encontro com a "diva" CARMEN McRAE parece ter sido o coroamento de uma carreira brilhante do grande vibrafonista. O repertório vai do nosso DJAVAN até STEVIE WONDER, passando por KURT WEILL, e DUKE ELLINGTON, entre outros luminares da composição. O grupo convocado por CAL TJADER é mais um "dream team", onde despontam o pianista Mark Levine e o percussionista Poncho Sanchez. E CARMEN McRAE dispensa comentários. Ou melhor: perguntem prá LENY ANDRADE qual a cantora de jazz na qual ela se inspirou e a resposta virá de bate-pronto: CARMEN Mc RAE. Precisa dizer mais alguma coisa?

Let me start by saying that if your idea of jazz does not include "outside" influences, then forget it, if you think that there can be a "pure" form of jazz, then go somewhere else. This recording is one of the earlier truly equal marriages of jazz and Latin music, where both parts work together, and the playing is fantastic! The whole band works as one unit, no small feat when there are two trombones and one singer. With this recording, Carmen McRae continues the well established tradition of taking pop songs and giving them a new workout. She takes Evil Ways, and gives it a sultry rendition. Her versions of Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing, All is Fair and Heat Wave have real personality and warmth and great sensitivity on Upside Down (Flor de Lis, penned by the great Brazilian singer and composer Djavan) and Besame Mucho. This was the last album Tjader made before he died. The repertoire swings from jazz to Latin, including the merengue interpretation of Love with the drum kit playing a modification of a standard jazz patterns, as well as all the Latin-izing. And what a wonderful change it is to hear Latin jazz album that is not purely Cuban or Brazilian influenced, but takes ideas and rhythms from a few places. Jazz? No. Latin jazz? You bet, and awesome Latin
jazz at that!

MINHA OPINIÃO - é fantástico o resultado da "latinidade" que Tjader e seu grupo conseguiram, transformando em "montunos" as harmonias de Djavan, Stevie Wonder, Kurt Weill & Cia - (tarefa complicada, pois nem todos os temas favorecem o desdobramento dos acordes em "montunos"). E a grande CARMEM sentiu-se "prá-lá--de-confortável", entrou na "pilha", e o resultado foi um saboroso e puríssimo álbum de latin jazz. OURO EM PÓ.

(*) "Montuno" é aquela "levada" característica do piano no "latin jazz", em que o pianista "desdobra" o acorde, quase num harpejo, e conduz a harmonia através da constante interligação dos mesmos, normalmente atráves do movimento da "sétima" de um acorde menor, que se converte na "terça" do acorde de sétima dominante, subsequente. (Meio complicado para "não-musicos", não é?). Mas o melhor exemplo do que é "montuno", para leigos, está no lindo tema "MORNING" de CLARE FISCHER, todo construído em cima de "montunos". (Tem várias versões desta música no blog, pois é quase um "hino-do-latin-jazz").
