PUCHO & HIS LATIN SOUL BROTHERS: CALIENTE CON SOUL

PUCHO & HIS LATIN SOUL BROTHERS
Henry "Pucho" Brown got his groove back when the British Acid Jazz scene resurrected
him in the early '90s. Thanks to Michael McFadden of San Francisco-based Ubiquity Records, this Harlem-born African American timbalero gave the Boogaloo a jazz face-lift in the late '60s alongside other bandleaders like Willie Bobo and Hugo Dickens. Now with Caliente Con Soull Pucho and his crew are back with their delightful NYC Latino street-edged sound. El Niño Mambo is the album opener featuring longtime saxman Eddie Pazant and guitarist Marvin Horne. Pazant is an unsung hero throughout with a biting articulation filleal with bluesy riffs who also provides a gorgeous must hear "Latin-for-lovers" rendition of Laura. Pucho anchors it all with a bag-of-tricks copped at the Apollo Theater as a kid watching Tito Puente. A devotee of Willie Bobo, you feel a confidence in the simplicity of his style but give him a break and he'll run with it, as he demonstrates on Descarga On Las Palmas. With his original pianist John "Mad Hatter" Spruill providing strong two-fisted montunos and skillful jazz flavors, there's a homespun looseness with an innate cohesion that comes with musical maturity. Recorded in Los Angeles, Pucho is joined by label-mate Bobby Matos and ace trombonist Art Velasco who guests along with Michael Turre (brother of Steve); they tear it up on flute on the Cubop romp Happy Feet Mambo and a swinging-version of Barry Manilow's Copacabana. This is Pucho & The Latín Soul Brothers at their best with a music born out of a shared experience with Caribbean neighbors in Black Harlem. It's infectious feel-good music spreading joy to audiences around the world with the sincere commitment to help them get their groove on. (JV)
