TITO RODRIGUEZ

TITO RODRIGUEZ
Tito Rodriguez vocalist, percussionist, composer, bandleader (1923 -1973) in the 1950’s through 60’s was a smooth voiced Latin nightclub crooner, who reigned over the radio and record charts geared toward the Puerto Rican community both in New York and on the island, where his music is still very popular. His popularity then grew broader and reached into all of Latin America. His distinct, resonant voice floated crystal-clear above the dense sound of his large orchestra, which was the best in its day. He is still revered as an uptempo sonero and a romantic singer who influenced the wave of salsa singers that followed. Tito Rodriguez’s last appearance was with Machito and his band at Madison Square Garden on 2 February 1973. He finally lost the battle with leukemia and 26 days later, on 28 February
1973, Rodriguez died in his wife’s arms.

ALBUM REVIEW
Tito Rodriguez, a smooth, vermouth voiced, ballad crooner... immaculate dresser and a ferocious Latin-Jazzer. This guy could do it all. In his short career he became a top headliner as a lead singer during the mambo, cha-cha-cha and charanga period, as an (very successful) orchestra leader he had top-billing, his shows (marquee battles with Tito Puente are legend) were always soldout, he became the top album seller as a romantic song singer, had a hit television program in Puerto Rico and started a successful record (TR Records) company. His impeccable style, an eye for a beautiful music make him one of the true trendsetters to this day. Gilberto Santa Rosa, a monster artist himself, patterns much of his stage persona and style after TR. This album is a small sampling of TR's enormous musical output but it's a great start. Tito had serious swing, even when he sang it smooth and slow. One of the best recordings of Tito Rodriguez.
