O pianista panamenho DANILO PEREZ, já conhecido no Blog, é um dos grandes nomes do "latin jazz". Neste álbum, reverencia o grande THELONIOUS MONK, incluindo seis obras-primas do genial pianista e compositor, mas não as "latinizou", ao contrário do que se informa na resenha aí embaixo.

ALBUM REVIEW
The Panamanian jazz pianist Danilo Pérez recorded an album whose title, “Panamonk,” neatly summed up its concept. It was made up primarily of compositions by Thelonious Monk, delivered with a Latin American inflection. Mr. Pérez’s approach was refreshing in its irreverence: rather than try to be as faithful as possible to Monk’s distinctive rhythms and harmonies, he used Monk’s vision as a jumping-off point for his own individuality as an improviser. Leading a trio, Mr. Pérez revisited six Monk´s compositions who received the full-on Latin treatment. In his unaccompanied interpretation of “ ’Round Midnight,” whose emotional intensity
has tempted many a good musician to lapse into melodrama, Mr. Pérez was introspective without being maudlin or sentimental. If Mr. Pérez rarely aped Monk’s style directly — his playing was far more legato, his lines far more elaborate — he often evoked Monk’s playful spirit.

MINHA OPINIÃO - Danilo Perez manteve as composições de Monk em estado natural. Na verdade a "latinidade" só está presente na "bossa-nova" que adorna o lindo tema "Everything happens to me" do grande Matt Dennis. É um belo álbum de um grande pianista, com estilo marcante e personalidade própria, cercado por um trio de grandes nomes. OURO EM PÓ
