HD é mais um grande pianista cubano, muito conhecido e respeitado entre os músicos de "latin jazz" e nem tanto do grande público. Como se constata em seu curriculo abaixo transcrito, trabalhou com grandes nomes do jazz, dentre os quais se inclui a nossa LENY ANDRADE que, como se sabe, é muito exigente e criteriosa na escolha dos seus músicos. Essa seria para os brasileiros uma grande referência, se alguma dúvida restasse sobre a proficiência de Hilario Durán. Um fato curioso na carreira de Hilário foi quando Arturo Sandoval abandonou o grupo sem avisar e foi para os USA. Hilário não deixou a "peteca cair": assumiu o comando, mudou o nome do conjunto
e seguiu em frente. Mais tarde , Hilário também saiu de Cuba e atualmente reside no Canadá.

Hilario Durán (b. 1953, Havana) is a Cuban jazz pianist. Durán studied at the Arnadeo Roldan Music Institute in Havana, studing tumbao with Evaristo Aparicio, composition and conducting from German Pifferrer, and orchestration from Guillermo Barreto. He formed a group in the 1970s called Los D'Siempre, which melded traditional Cuban elements with those of modern jazz. He joined Arturo Sandoval's band from 1981 to 1990. He also worked with Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation
Orchestra and Michel Legrand. He formed a new group, Perspectiva, in 1990, and toured Central America and Europe. From 1995 he worked as a solo artist in Toronto, Canada, and has collaborated over the course of his career with Tata Guines, Changuito, Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Jorge Reyes, Roberto Occhipinti, Larry Cramer, John Patitucci, Michael Brecker, Regina Carter, Dave Valentin, Juan Pablo Torres, John Benitez, Dafnis Prieto, Hugh Marsh, Carlos "Patato" Valdés, Lenny Andrade, Quartetto Gelato and the Gryphon Trio. Duran was nominated for Juno Awards in 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007, winning in 2005 for New Danzon.

ALBUM REVIEW
Released by the Montreal-based label Justin Time, Killer Tumbao is an all-star session that features the visionary arrangements and imaginative solos of one of Cuba's top jazz pianists, Hilario Durán, who rose to prominence in the 1980s as Arturo Sandoval's musical director. After Sandoval's unexpected defection to the U.S., Durán inherited the trumpeter's Cuban group, subsequently known as Perspective. On this particular occasion, however, Durán heads a 14-piece band that features various legendary old-timers (Changuito, Tata Güines, etc.) and a few young warriors, including the promising 22 year old trap drummer Dafnis Prieto. Besides Durán, there are two other veterans of Sandoval's Cuban ensemble- tumbador/güiro player Reinaldo "Pichy" Valera and bassist Jorge Reyes (who appears on the album cover, behind Durán, in the midst of Old Havana). The cast even includes a Canadian-born reedwoman who has become in recent years (like Celine Valle, Maraca's French spouse) a de facto Cuban - flutist/soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett.

MINHA OPINIÃO - raro e precioso álbum de Hilário Duran, com arranjos que misturam a modernidade do Irakere com a tradição dos tradicionais "combos" cubanos. Além dos percussionistas Tata Guines e Changuito, destaco a presença de CARLOS AVERHOFF, bom amigo e companheiro de "canjas" no "Van Dyke´s Cafe" e outros "points" de latin jazz em Miami. AVERHOFF também é cubano, ex-integrante do Irakere e atual componente do grupo "Latin Jazz Explosion", dirigido por Sammy Figueroa. Outro grande destaque é a grande flautista e saxofonista JANE BUNNETT, que já tem um álbum postado aqui no blog. UM LUXO!
