Este álbum tem um significado muito especial: eu tinha 15 anos de idade quando meu pai comprou o original, um vinyl de 10" com apenas oito faixas, abrindo para mim as portas da "academia" (eu diria - do universo musical) de Kenton. Aquele álbum era uma obra-prima e reunia sete arranjos sofisticadíssimos, com a assinatura de Bill Russo (um dos maiores arranjadores de todos os tempos ) e um do próprio Kenton. O mais curioso é que foi gravado meio de má vontade por Kenton, que se viu forçado a gravar um disco "comercial" para competir com as vendagens das big-bands populares, como as de Glenn Miller e Tommy Dorsey, e arrecadar recursos financeiros para continuar com suas experiências do "progressive jazz". Os músicos são um verdadeiro "dream team". O solos de Frank Rosolino em "Over the Rainbow" e de Lee Konitz em "Lover Man" são antológicos - isso sem contar com as intervenções de Maynard Ferguson e seu estratosférico trumpete, tocando notas inatingíveis por trumpetistas normais. Os arranjos de "Sophisticated Lady" e "Fascinating Rhythm" até hoje não foram superados e permanecem como "landmarks" do bom gosto, elegância e sofisticação. Aquele velho vinyl original, que guardo como um "quadro de Picasso" contém, como disse acima, apenas as oito primeiras faixas. Infelizmente os seis arranjos adicionados a este álbum com 14 músicas não têm o mesmo padrão de qualidade. A "latinidade" necessária à postagem está no em "Begin the Beguine" e "Malagueña", embora seja desnecessária qualquer justificativa, porque Kenton era apaixonado pelos ritmos afro-cubanos e, não por acaso, CHICO O´FARRIL foi arranjador da banda por muitos anos e mostrou a SK os atalhos para chegar a Cuba, como se constata no arranjo de "Begin the Beguine".

(*)Bill Russo é um capítulo à parte na história dos grandes arranjadores norte-americanos. Depois de longo tempo ao lado de Stan Kenton, passou a dedicar seu tempo à música erudita. É desconhecido do grande público e consiste mais um daqueles segredos muito bem guardados por seus admiradores. Seus livros de arranjos são leitura obrigatória para qualquer arranjador.

ALBUM REVIEW
Another in the first rate series of collections of dance music that the Kenton band recorded in order to remain financially afloat even as its leader pushed the envelope when it came to innovation. Oddly, or perhaps not, these early arrangements (this set recorded in 1953) represent some of the most timeless of Stan Kenton's recordings. Sketches On Standards almost never shouts -- listen to the later Cuban Fire album for gale force brass and rhythm -- but nor does it sleepwalk. A Latin-tinged 'Begin the Beguine' makes a rare and welcome appearance, arranged by Kenton himself, simply and effectively. Bill Russo's arrangement of 'Fascinatin' Rhythm' is a highlight, more complex and benefitting from Lee Konitz' always capable alto sax.
'There's a Small Hotel' is a nice slow dance number, and the list goes on. Fans of the louder, leading edge Kenton may find this album quiet. Technically, it represents some very appealing, straightforward recordings of songs that showcase the talent of this group. Most welcome is that Kenton's own piano is not buried in the walls of sound so common to his later efforts. If you are new to Stan Kenton, this might not be the place to start because there are other better known albums that overshadow Sketches on Standards. Sound quality is excellent for 1953, however, and the tracks are well chosen. For those times when you want to enjoy first
rate jazz without necessarily waking up the neighborhood, it would be hard to argue with the current album.

MY OPINION
I consider the original 10" LP with only eight tracks a true landmark in the history of "commercial big-bands recordings". The arrangements of six tracks added to the re-edition of aforesaid vinyl, do not have same high quality. Anyway, those eight first tracks arrangements, that intented to be "commercial" are much more than just dance music and stand up as superb listening music decades later. Kenton always hired the best arrangers and gave them great musical freedom; being himself a great arranger he did know pretty well how a collaboration between talented arrangers and great players can bring new life to tunes we've heard at least a thousand times. The key (and, for sure, the best of them all) arranger here is the great Bill Russo, who penned 7 arrangements. By the way: Kenton not only hired the best arrangers, but also the best musicians. Therefore, the band's performance is brilliant, and you get to hear superb soloists such as Conte Candoli on Pennies From Heaven, Lee Konitz on Lover Man, trombonist Frank Rosolino on Over The Rainbow. The great altoist Lennie Niehaus (who nowadays is in charge of any movie track of films produced by Clint Eastwood) is sparkling form on "I'm Glad There is You. Maynard Ferguson's brilliant high note work sparks Sophisticated Lady. The first eight tracks are outstanding, BREATHTAKING. But I would not say the same about the whole album.

MINHA OPINIÃO - eu considero os oito primeiro arranjos, provenientes do álbum original, de 10", contidos neste álbum como verdadeiras obras-primas da arquitetura dos arranjos para orquestras de jazz. E em se tratando de um disco "comercial" (para os padrões de Kenton, é claro) não conheço qualquer outro, de qualquer big-band, com a mesma qualidade dessas faixas, cujos arranjos são uma síntese da elegância, sofisticação, competência, excelência, proficiência, bom gosto, etc. Nesta regravação foram adicionadas mais 6 faixas que, infelizmente, não têm o mesmo padrão de qualidade dos arranjos de Bill Russo. O álbum original era OURO EM PÓ do mais alto quilate, conceito que não se aplica a todo o álbum de 14 faixas.

(*)Pensando bem, o arranjo de Lennie Niehaus para "I´m glad there is your" está dentro do padrão Kenton de qualidade.
