Quando estou em New York, não deixo de "assinar o ponto" aos domingos, no Birdland, para assistir à Orquestra de Chico O´Farrill, dirigida por seu filho Arturo. Agora, além da CFO, Arturo também dirige esta excelente AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA, que se apresenta regularmente no Lincoln Center, mais um programa obrigatório para os aficcionados.

Una Noche Inolvidable (An Unforgettable Night) was recorded on January 28, 2005, during the inaugural season at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s new home, Frederick P. Rose Hall. For this musical presentation, O’Farrill invited two noted vocalists in the Afro-Latin tradition, Herman Olivera and Claudia Acuña, to join the big band.
From Newark, New Jersey, Olivera was part of the band, Conjunto Libre and has worked with Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri. From Chile, Acuña regularly performed in Santiago’s jazz clubs honing her individual style before moving to the U.S. The critically acclaimed orchestra displays its considerable energy and talent on Una Noche Inolvidable. Music Director Arturo O’Farrill believes strongly in the mission of the ALJO: “Our mission is to honor great works from Latin jazz masters, commission a new body of work for this genre and educate listeners on the impact of Afro Latin rhythms on jazz. We are deeply committed to groove and clava so get
ready to swing hard!”. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Artistic Director, Wynton Marsalis adds: “We have great respect for the cultural legacy of Latin American composers like Chico O’Farrill, Mario Bauza and Chano Pozo. The ALJO is comprised of the cream of the crop of today’s Latin jazz musicians who can do artistic justice to this musical legacy. The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra is composed of 18 soloists who play classics of the Afro-Latin tradition. O’Farrill also directs the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra – the band that preserves much of his father’s music. He has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Fort Apache Band, Carla Bley, Lester Bowie, Harry Belafonte, Freddy Cole and Wynton Marsalis.

MINHA OPINIÃO - Arturo é filho do grande Chico O´Farrill e continua dirigindo a banda do falecido pai, que se apresenta todos os domingos no Birdland, em New York. Nesta excelente Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, também formada e dirigida por Arturo, encontramos luminares do latin jazz, tais como meu velho amigo Michael Philip
Mossman, ao lado de Mario Rivera, Bobby Porcelli e Vince Cherico, para citar apenas 4 nomes conhecidos. As vozes da bela Claudia Acuña e de Herman Olivera acrescentam mais brilho ainda aos ótimos arranjos.
