EDDIE CANO
O "latin groove californiano " de Eddie Cano é ligeiramente diferente daquele de New York ou Miami. Cano, assim como Ruben Estrada ou Vince Guaraldi, por exemplo, tem um tempero mais mexicano que cubano ou portorriquenho. Comparativamente: é como o "samba-jazz" do Rio e de São Paulo, cujas "levadas" eram diferentes. Eddie Cano se situou na mesma faixa de mercado de Cal Tjader, seu inspirador. Talvez a maior diferença entre eles tenha sido o fato de Eddie Cano ter visado mais o lado comercial da música, voltada para um público mais interessado em dançar que ouvir.

EDDIE CANO
Eddie Cano (6 June 1927–30 January 1988) was an Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin jazz pianist born in Los Angeles, California. He began his musical career with Miguelito Valdéz and his orchestra. Cano has worked with so many musicians including Bobby Ramos, Les Baxter, Jack Costanzo, Buddy Collette, Tony Martinez, and many, many others. Influenced by Noro Morales and Errol Gardner, he developed an inimitable rhythmic style, drive and ability to "lift" a band. He found an appreciative audience for a series of albums under his own name released in the '50s and '60s.

ALBUM REVIEW
Eddie Cano started with Cal Tjader as his pianist and arranger. This album, focuses on the afro-cuban rhythms Cano is known for. The selections are top rate and the arrangements are highly original. Those of you who are familiar with Duke Ellington´s masterpieces will be surprised with some original and imaginative arrangements penned by Cano. The Porter selections are also outstanding , as well as Cano´s own compositions. Pretty good stuff.

MINHA OPINIÃO - Eddie Cano nunca foi muito respeitado pelos jazzistas mais radicais: era taxado de "comercial" - com razão. Apesar disso, Eddie Cano dominava a arte de escrever arranjos comerciais de bom gosto. Afinal de contas, nem todo mundo é "jazzmaníaco" - aliás, tem gente que odeia jazz... Eu, particularmente, não gosto de "easy listening" mas admito: a boa música não tem que ter, necessáriamente, envólucro jazzístico.

(*)Além de Cal Tjader, outra grande influência de Eddie Cano foi George Shearing, como bem demonstram as passagens de alguns arranjos, com o mais puro "Shearing sound".
