Quando Dave Brubeck surgiu no cenário jazzistico nos anos 50, suas inovações rítmicas provocaram reações extremadas, tipo AMOR ou ÓDIO. Quem era antenado na modernidade adorava, enquanto os jazzófilos mais conservadores, achavam que era um engodo. Eu, durante algum tempo, fui fan-de-carteirinha. Depois, cheguei à conclusão de que o que mais me impressionava era a "artistry" de Paul Desmond. Considero Dave Bubeck um ótimo pianista, embora não o inclua entre os meus favoritos. O que de mais importante Brubeck conseguiu foi (principalmente, graças ao talento de PAUL DESMOND) forjar um som que influenciou durante algum tempo a muitos músicos e grupos de jazz. As novidades rítmicas (compassos compostos, tipo 5/4, 9/8, etc) foram coisa passageira e ficaram restritas aos LPs (Time Out, Time further out) do Quarteto. Um de seus mais ferrenhos admiradores e seguidores foi DICK FARNEY. E a recíproca era verdadeira: Brubeck era grande amigo e admirador de Dick Farney, a quem considerava um dos melhores pianistas de jazz. E tal afirmativa me foi feita pelo próprio Brubeck em Petrópolis, onde o conheci, quando lá se apresentou num concerto nos anos 70. Perguntou logo por seu amigo Dick e quando lhe respondi que ele estava afastado da música e não se apresentava nem gravava mais, porque não existia espaço para a sua arte no mercado brasileiro, Brubeck ficou pasmo, consternado e se negou a acreditar no que ouvia. Dave, a quem voltei a encontrar nos anos 90 no USA, é um gentleman, extraordinariamente bem educado, gentil e atencioso.

ALBUM REVIEW
One of the better Dave Brubeck LPs from the later period of the Quartet with altoist Paul Desmond, this set is unusual in that it only contains one Brubeck original. On such tunes as "Cielito Lindo," the beautiful "La Paloma," "Besame Mucho" and "Estrellita," the Quartet is augmented by guitarist Chamin Correa and percussionist Rabito Agueros. The results are melodic but swinging treatments of a variety of famous themes.

Perhaps no other jazz artist has used the live album to his advantage more so than Brubeck. His series of college recordings in the early 1950s launched his career in full, and by the time his quartet performed these Mexican concerts in 1967, they were in the twilight of one of jazz's most successful runs. Delivering a repertoire of Mexican pop and folk standards (plus one Latin-tinged original), Brubeck mostly shows his softer melodic side, trading in his more intense, agitated ideas for hightened elements of beauty and swing. His dialogue with Mexican guitarist Chamin Correa on "Sobre Las Olas" is delightfully bright. Of course, Paul Desmond's alto work always tended toward the lighthearted; it's elegantly fragile (over Rabito Agueros's most delicate bongos) on "La Paloma Azul" and wonderfully frisky on "Estrellita." Brubeck and Desmond lay out for the fan favorite "Alla En El Rancho Grande," but Brubeck returns for a furious reading of "La Bamba," propelled by the percussion team of Rabito and Joe Morello. The timeless material, guest musicians, and above all, the fertility of the Brubeck Quartet make this Latin bit a success.

MINHA OPINIÃO: eu diria que é um álbum um tanto quanto exótico, porque o repertório não combina com jazz e muito menos com o estilo personalíssimo do quarteto, cuja sonoridade foi desfigurada com a presença de congas, bongôs e guitarra. Vale mais pela curiosidade do que pela qualidade.
