Since 1981's TORCH, Carly Simon has recorded three more collections of pre-rock standards. 2005's MOONLIGHT SERENADE isthe best of the lot, and one of the best albums of standards yet recorded by a singer of Simon's generation. It beats the pants off of similar sets by Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart, for example. For one thing, Simon is simply a great singer, even at this late stage in her career; she's taken care of her instrument, and her tone throughout MOONLIGHT SERENADE is superb, as is her increasingly jazzy and unconventionalphrasing. (Listen to her subtle but effective vibrato on "All The Things You Are", for starters.) More importantly, Simon chooses songs to suit her voice, not her audience's expectations, which means that along withsuch familiar tunes as "I Only Have Eyes For You", listeners are treated to readingsof relative obscurities like "My One and Only Love" insteadof the umpteenth rendition of "Stardust".

MINHA OPINIÃO: álguns outros "pesos-pesados" do pop/rock, como Linda Ronstadt e Rod Stewart, gravaram álbuns de "standards", com arranjos sensacionais, escritos por mestres do calibre de Nelson Riddle, por exemplo. Mas as gravações de Carly Simon são superiores às de todos eles, por várias razões: antes de tudo, porque é uma "senhora cantora"; depois, pela intimidade com os "standards", que advém da sua confessa paixão pelos discos de Frank Sinatra. Finalmente, porque tem uma classe, um relaxamento e uma elegância que falta a Linda e Rod. E como "menos é mais", Carly abriu mão de arranjos grandiloquentes, preferindo um combo formado por excelentes "músicos de estúdio". (Desta vez não tem nenhum grande nome do jazz). Com este repertório de pedras preciosas, falta acrescentar apenas o OURO EM PÓ!
