ISRAEL "CACHAO" LÓPEZ
No dia 22 de março p.p. o contrabaixista cubano ISRAEL "Cachao" LóPEZ morreu, aos 89 anos, aqui em Miami. Já postei anteriormente um álbum de CACHÀO, no qual transcrevi sua biografia. Nunca é demais relembrar, todavia, que ele e seu irmão ORESTES
LOPEZ, foram os criadores do Mambo. Também foi "Cachao" quem popularizou a "Descarga", uma "jam session" que incorpora elementos do Jazz e da música Afro-Cubana. CACHAO é um ícone, uma referência na música cubana e um dos seus maiores
nomes em todos os tempos. Em seus últimos dias, "CACHAO" teve a assistência e a presença constante de ANDY GARCIA, seu grande amigo. Andy que, para quem não sabe, além do grande ator, é um excelente percussionista e - melhor ainda, um grande caráter, produziu um documentário sobre a vida e a música de CACHAO, intutulado "Con su ritmo no hay dos".

ISRAEL "Cachao" LÓPEZ, probably the most important bassist in the story of Cuban music, has died in Miami aged 89, on past march, 22. One of the most remarkable Cuban musicians, his supple rhythms and fluid melodies helped develop the music of his country into the leading Latin American style. He is celebrated as the inventor of the mambo rhythm and a salsa pioneer and a very respected figure among aficionados of Cuban music, as well. By the 1980's Cachao was a largely forgotten figure. By the early 1990s he was semi-retired. But then Cuban-American actor Andy
Garcia approached Cachao, offering to both produce a Cachao album and direct a documentary. Cachao agreed and the album, Master Sessions, Volume 1 (1994) won him both a 1995 Grammy and a wider audience than ever before. The 1994 documentary, "Cachao ... Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos" (Cachao ... Like His Rhythm There is No Other), focused on the recording that produced Master Sessions while allowing Cachao to tell his life story. It won a large US audience. He is survived by his daughter, María Elena López, and nephew Orlando "Cachaito" López, the bassist in Buena Vista Social Club.

MINHA OPINIÃO: "CACHAO" é um ícone da música cubana e do "afro-cuban-latin-jazz". Após ter galgaldo grande sucesso nos anos 40 e 50, principalmente por ter sido o criador do Mambo, caiu no ostracismo. Seu grande admirador ANDY GARCIA, que além de ator e músico é uma extraordinária figura humana, foi quem o trouxe de volta à música e ao sucesso. Assisti a várias performances de CACHAO ao vivo; mesmo em idade avançada, mantinha o vigor, o entusiasmo e grande empatia com seu público Tinha uma técnica absolutamente pessoal e sua "levada", seu "groove" influenciaram a TODOS os contrabaixistas cubanos e latinos em geral. Estou postando dois albuns com DESCARGAS, que é o nome atribuído por Cachao às "latin-jazz-jam-session". Confiram a lista dos participantes e imaginem o que deve ter sido assistir a uma dessas "descargas".
