RAY BARRETTO -
The late american-boricua percussionist Ray Barretto has been considered by some historians as one of the "fathers of Latin-Jazz", along with Chano Pozo & Dizzy Gillespie. His biografy is already avaiable in this blog - (see label "Ray Barreto"). Mr. Barreto left a huge discografy. This album shows, once again, his incredible artistry. The track 'SERENATA' deserves special attention. It's a gorgeous composition penned by the great american composer LEROY HOLMES (Mr. Holmes is also the composer of "Sleigh ride", one of the most beatiful Xmas songs, ever.)

This is an excellent CD: latin jazz at its finest! From the first song to the last it SWINGS HARD with SUBTLETY at the same time. Beautiful arrangements and plenty of snap from the skillful musicians surrounding Ray, very well-recorded on top. This is what jazz is about: it MOVES YOU in every way, it gets you dancing and at the same
time it makes you think about life. Do yourself a favor and buy it. You will not regret it! Like the title of the album's best cut this disc is a "Bendicion" (blessing) for all of us.

MINHA OPINIÃO: neste álbum se encontra a (re)leitura de Ray Barretto para uma bela composição do grande LEROY ANDERSON: "Serenata" (*), que foi gravada por grandes nomes como Sarah Vaughan, George Shearing, Cal Tjader, Quincy Jones, Orquestra Sinfonica de Londres, Art Farmer, etc. (Todavia, Anderson, que é o compositor de uma das mais lindas canções de Natal, "Sleigh Ride", continua a ser um segredo muito bem guardado). O falecido RAY BARRETO, um dos "monstros sagrados" da percussão latina exibe neste esplêndido álbum algumas das diferentes "levadas" que fazem parte do seu vasto arsenal de ritmos. A elegante sonoridade do NEW WORLD SPIRIT é típica de combos de jazz "straight ahead", com riquíssimos duetos de sax-alto e piston e irrepreensíveis solos e improvisos. OURO EM PÓ!
