Em Petrópolis, nos anos 80, havia uma cantina italiana, a "Cantina Nino", cujos proprietários eram dois irmãos italianos, Raphael e Nino, apaixonados por música. Eles tocavam trumpete e saxofone, respectivamente, e mantinham um conjunto regular, tocando todas as noites. Além das "jam sessions" quase diárias, eles traziam músicos de jazz para ali se apresentarem. Freddie Cole, depois de um show que realizou em Petrópolis, deu uma "canja" memorável. E foi lá que conheci e toquei com a saudosa e querida ANA MAZZOTTI que, apesar de frágil e pequenina era um GIGANTE no piano e cantando. Como, chauvinistamente, se dizia no "Beco das Garrafas": TOCAVA FEITO HOMEM...Foi uma lástima que ANA nos tivesse deixado tão cedo: faleceu precocemente em 1988, vítima de câncer.

(*) O Mauro Perez, do "Hot Beat Jazz Blog" era frequentador da "Cantina Nino", instalada no sobrado de um posto de gasolina, onde também funcionou o "Breguet´s", legendário bar de propriedade de ninguém menos que JOÃO DONATO & EDISON MACHADO. Já contei alguns "causos" desse inacreditável bar, em postagens do JD.

Pouco consegui saber a respeito da biografia de Ana. Tive uma breve convivência com ela, um doce de pessoa: terna, afável, carinhosa, simpática e talentosa até não mais poder. Jamais poderia supor que ela viria a falecer tão precocemente, apenas alguns anos depois que a conheci. Altamente influenciada por Chick Corea, Ana tocava um piano vigoroso, com muita raça, pegada e suingue, na mesma linha da igualmente grande Tania Maria. Mas a voz de AM estava mais próxima de sua conterrânea Elis Regina.

The late and, unfortunately, short lived Brazilian singer and pianist Ana Mazzotti was specialized in jazz and intimate live shows. But other than this I really don't have much information about her. She was born in Caxias do Sul, RS in 17/08/1950 and passed away in 20/01/1988, victimized by cancer. As a pianist she has been deeply influenced by Chick Corea and her voice had a cool charm that's perfect. I would say that Ana Mazzotti used to sound a little bit like Elis Regina and Tania Maria. Summing up, I'm left to rejoice in the great music she left behind, while lamenting the loss of what might have been. Again, a truly memorable artist.

ALBUM REVIEW
An amazing album of icy Brazilian jazz and sweet electric funk! Singer Ana Mazzotti is at the head of the session - singing with this breezy style that's at once cold and warm, cool and emotive - and she's backed by a small jazz combo with some incredible moog, Arp, and organ from Jose Roberto! The record's got a bucketful of groove-heavy tracks that feel like CTI meeting up with Joao Donato - and the album's a treasure that should be in the collection of any fan of 70s Brazilian funk! Titles include "Cordao", "Soul", "Bairro Negro", "Eu Sou Mais Eu", "Roda Mundo", "Sou", and "Agora Ou Nunca Mais" - plus an incredible version of "Feel Like Making Love"!

This LP was originally released in 1974, on Top Tape Music. Mazzottis vocals are backed by a seriously funking quartet. In fact, it says here on the release notes that three of its members played with the brazilian legend Azymuth. The use of Fender piano and other early synths give this album a touch of soft-edged
fusion rather like some of the Antonio Carlo Jobim's best work on CTI (I'm thinking of "Stone Flower" in particular). The lushness is derived from the group's funkyness but Jose Roberto who plays keys is particularly able of generating that unmistakable 70's jazzfunk sound that is so much sought after in today's nu-jazz circles. In fact, this is the stuff that guys like Jazzanova must be listening to before going into the studio (or while actually recording, for that matter). Tracks like "Agora Ou Nunca Mais" and "Eu Sou Mais Eu" will certainly appeal to those who love their 70's loungejazz pure and unspoiled by 4/4 electronics. While there's some tight swinging it all remains very relaxed... It's soulful jazz fusion à la brasil at its best.

MINHA OPINIÃO - neste álbum, um dos poucos registros da "artistry" de Ana Mazzotti, ela não toca piano. Modestamente, abriu mão de se auto-acompanhar e chamou para escorá-la nada menos que o "Azymuth". Apesar da boa performance de Ana e do Azimuth, acho que o repertório poderia ter sidor melhor escolhido. A despeito dessa restrição (questão de gosto, discutível, como sempre), recomendo a audição desse belo álbum, item indispensável para colecionadores de raridades.
