CHICAGO
O Chicago é uma banda formada em 1967 por músicos de Chicago, Illinois. Anteriormente chamava-se The Big Thing e em seguida Chicago Transit Authority.
A formação inicial do grupo incluía Walter Paraider no saxofone, Lee Loughnane no trompete, Terry Kath na guitarra e voz, Danny Seraphine na bateria, James Pankow no trombone e Robert Lamm no orgão e voz. No começo, a banda não tinha baixista, mas em Dezembro de 1967 o baixista e vocalista Peter Cetera junta-se a eles vindo da banda rival The Exceptions. Sob a orientação do empresário e produtor James William
Guercio, que inicialmente tinha dado à banda o nome de Chicago Transit Authority (nome que teve depois de ser reduzido porque o Departamento de Trânsito de Chicago não autorizou o uso do nome), a banda muda-se para Los Angeles , dando início a uma longa história de sucesso. A música do Chicago era uma mistura de estilos, desde o rock, até à pop ligeira, incorporando elementos do jazz e música clássica. Após a morte de Terry Kath em 23 de Janeiro de 1978, ocorrido por um acidente com arma de fogo, o Chicago entra em declínio, com fatos como o aumento do consumo de drogas entre seus integrantes e a crise gerada pela descoberta de graves informações sobre James William Guercio, seu empresário - entre elas, a de que ele estaria roubando a banda, terminando em sua demissão. A partir daí, houve uma série de mudanças no "line up", conforme se constata na enorme lista abaixo transcrita. Mais tarde, o grupo se recuperou e voltou a produzir grande música, sendo um dos grupos de vida mais longa na história do "pop-rock".

The band was formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967, when a group of DePaul University music students began playing a series of late-night jams at clubs on and off campus. They added more members, eventually growing to seven players and went professional as a cover band called The Big Thing. The band featured an unusual and unusually versatile line-up of instrumentalists, including saxophonist Walter Parazaider, trombonist James Pankow, and trumpet player Lee Loughnane, along with more traditional rock instruments — guitarist Terry Kath, keyboardist Robert Lamm, drummer Danny Seraphine, and bassist Peter Cetera (who was the last to join the original group). While gaining some success as a cover band, the group worked on original songs and, in June 1968, moved to Los Angeles, California under the guidance of their friend and manager James William Guercio, changed the name, signed with Columbia Records and the rest is history - a long history of Chicago is one of the longest running and most successful U.S. jazz oriented pop/rock and roll groups.

ALBUM REVIEW
This Chicago offering is a terrific blend of the original trademark Chicago style with an excellent choice of standards from the Big Band era. While some critics have criticized the band for "Chicagoizing" these "classics", that's exactly what makes this such a unique and exciting CD. Most every other artist's foray into the Big Band standards arena has produced recordings that are so true to the original arrangements (e.g. Harry Connick, Linda Rondstadt), they might as well have been recorded in the '40's, this outing by the boys from the Windy City evidences a fresh approach to this timeless material. Every track shows Chicago exploring the composition from a different angle: whether it is the mystically slow tempo of "Night and Day", the Latin-tinged "Sing, Sing, Sing", or the down-and-dirty blues rock shuffle of "Blues in the Night". True, the horn charts sound like classic Chicago, and that's the beauty of it. Here, they sound as warm and fat as ever, and trombonist Jimmy Pankow weaves them into the arrangements with his proven skill. Nothing fancy, just melodic and interesting horn charts with the trademark Chicago horns' silky style. Every track here is a winner. A great CD!

MINHA OPINIÃO : antes de mais nada: assino em baixo, avalizo e faço minhas cada uma das palavras do comentário acima transcrito. O Chicago e o "Blood Sweat & Tears" foram os pioneiros e os melhores exemplos de "fusion" bem sucedida de "jazz+rock". Depois houve mais algumas outras, como o "Earth, Wind & Fire", "Tower of Power", etc.
Mas o caminho foi aberto pelos dois legendários e seminais grupos. Neste primoroso álbum, o Chicago homenageia as grandes "big bands", com um repertório irrepreensível e arranjos excelentes, como sempre. Apesar de não ser "latin-jazz", na faixa "Sing, sing, sing" o Chicago - a despeito da incômoda e dispensável presença do "Gipsy Kings" - "flerta" com o Caribe. Ademais, a grande qualidade deste álbum me levaria a postá-lo de qualquer maneira, até porque o Chicago já gravou muita coisa latina - inclusive um tema antológico em homenagem a Mongo Santamaria (Mongonucleosis). Além do mais o nosso MARCOS VALLE foi tecladista do Chicago por um curto período e o nosso LAUDIR DE OLIVEIRA fez parte do grupo por 8 anos; isso garante ao Chicago o necessário "atestado-de-latinidade". BELEZA PURA!
