AL JARREAU
Alwyn Lopez Jarreau é nasceu em Milwaukee, USA, em 12 de março de 1940. Filho de um vigário, começou a cantar em coro de igreja e se profissionalizou em 1962, como integrante de um grupo de jazz liderado por George Duke. Extremamente versátil, Jarreau foi premiado seis vezes com o Grammy em três categorias distintas: jazz, pop e R&B. Nos discos de AJ, o repertório normalmente é composto por músicas de vários estilos. Não sou um grande admirador de Al Jarreau, exatamente pela mistura - nem sempre bem dosada, que enfia no mesmo "saco de gatos" Jon Hendricks, Johnny Matthis & Bob McFerrin. Mas gosto deste deste álbum, inteiramente dedicado a "straight ahead jazz", com um repertório irretocável, sem concessões a novidades passageiras e descartáveis.

ALBUM REVIEW
Al Jarreau has always had top priority for my ears straight to my heart. He can take a song and turn it into his own expert opinion of how that song should be sung. This particluar cd focuses on some great jazz, some from the 40's, and he interprets it all with so much grace. "Accentuate the Positive" is jazz, pure and simple. My favorite track is "My Foolish Heart" and for good reason - his vocal skill is like a beacon through that melody. Al Jurreau's supple vocal is perfect, some amazing tenor saxophone from Keith Anderson doesn't hurt.
The stunning ensemble here is too spectacular to go without notice or note: I love Al Jurreau's latest "All I Got" R&B theme cd also produced by Tommy LiPuma. "Accentuate the Positive" though moves from blues jazz tracks like "Cold Duck" to soft gentle ballads like "My Foolish Heart" and funkified jazz like the remake "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive." There is something bascially so indescribably delicious about this cd. The musicality is so seamless, seems so pulled-together to me, yet so flexible and emotively seems buoyantly spontaneous. Outstanding.

MY OPINION
This is a completely "jazz oriented recording", not usual in Jarreau´s discography. With this album, Al Jarreu achieved (with a stellar band, and beautiful arrangements) impeccable and inspired performances of the well-chosen standards, which prove him to be an exquisite ballad singer and a jazz man with an irrevocable sense of swing. The nice arrangements penned by Larry E. Williams and the extraordinary level of musicianship of the instrumental players has provided a musical setting fit for a legend. "Accentuate the positive" is a landmark recording that celebrates the vocal art of Al Jarreau.

MINHA OPINIÃO: um Al Jarreau mais contido, sem os usuais malabarismos vocais, entrega com categoria o excelente repertório. Minhas faixas preferidas são: (a) "My foolish heart", pela delicada "levada" em clima de bossa-nova e elegância do arranjo; (b) "Waltz for Debbie", obra prima de Bill Evans, pela excelente performance do cantor, com destaque para o dueto com a guitarra; (c) "Groovin´High", bepop da mais alta estirpe, da lavra de Dizzy Gillespie, em ritmo de "samba-funk", é um veículo perfeito para o "jeito Al Jarreau de cantar", esbanjando "swing". (Tem, de quebra, o achado da citação de "Whispering" e um dueto sensacional com o contrabaixo). Pra mim, é o melhor álbum gravado por Al Jarreau, com um timaço de músicos.
