Em 1996 meu filho morava e estudava aqui em Haya (a.k.a. The Hague, Den Haag), cidade que entrou paara a Hitória do Brasil através do célebre discurso de RUY BARBOSA. Todos os anos eu vinha visitá-lo e, espertamente, escolhia o mês de julho, não só pela temperatura
amena, mas porque naquele mês aqui se realiza anualmente o melhor Festival de Jazz da Europa, quiça do mundo: O NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL. Pois bem: naquele ano eu estava no setor de "Latin Jazz" conversando com meu grande amigo e vizinho em Miami, MIKE ORTA, um dos grandes pianistas de latin jazz, integrante do grupo de PAQUITO D'RIVERA, que ainda ia se apresentar. No meio da conversa, subiu ao palco o grupo NUEVA MANTECA - que pelo nome parecia ser Cubano ou Portorriquenho; estranhamos, porque os caras eram todos LOUROS. Paramos de conversar, pasmos com o som e, mais ainda, quando o locutor anunciou que o grupo era HOLANDÊS! Desafortunadamente, não vou conseguir vê-los tocar, desta vez: consultei a agenda do grupo
e eles estão em outras paragens. Só vão estar de volta à Holanda em setembro. Uma pena...

NUEVA MANTECA
In 1982, bandleader Jan Laurens Hartong formed the 10-piece salsa group Manteca, inspired by the enormous latin and salsa rage in Europe. In 1987, after several study trips to Cuba, the bandleader decided to change the musical concept and to restart with the group as Nueva Manteca. This new group was based, in a more focused way, on the original Cubop concept, in a multidirectional way, but still respecting the historical continuity that we call tradition. Nueva Manteca creates a synergy between Cuban music and Jazz music “pur sang”. The group is not “just another good latin jazz band” as there are so many these last few years, they are unique in performance, style and repertoire. Their – mostly own – arrangements
and compositions show inventively, creativity and most all a musical spirit that’s really something! Every year, Nueva Manteca plans a “Meets the legends” project; a tour through the Netherlands with a special “giant” latin-musician. Guests op till now have been a.o.: Claudio Roditi, Giovanni Hidalgo, Armando Peraza, Luis Conte, Ralph Irizarry and Orestes Vilato. Orestes Vilato joined the band for the second time in February 2004. Bandleader/pianist Jan Laurens Hartong had extensive training in both Bebop and Latin traditions. As a finalist in the 1966 Vienna World Jazz Competition he won a medal, which was handed to him by jury member Julian "Cannonball " Adderley. Hartong studied Salsa with New York top pianist Eddie Martinez and in Cuba with keyboard greats Hernan Lopez-Nussa (ex-Grupo Afro Cuba) and the late Emiliano Salvador.

NICKY MARRERO
Maestro percusionista y timbalero Nicky Marrero fue omnipresente durante la década de 1970 Nueva York boom de la salsa, tocaNDO y grabando con Eddie Palmieri, Larry Harlow, Ismael Miranda, Louie Cruz, Fania All Stars, Machito y mucho mas. Uno de los chicos más reducido ritmo nunca, su estilo es un híbrido de los grandes: Manny Oquendo, Tito Puente y Orestes Vilató. Su lugar en la historia la salsa y latin jazz es seguro y verdaderamente merecido.

MINHA OPINIÃO - é emocionante e comovente o esforço, a dedicação e o amor dos rapazes do NUEVA MANTECA pelo 'latin jazz'. Segundo suas biografias, todos eles fizeram cursos intensivos em Cuba, Porto
Rico e New York, para assimilar, diretamente da fonte, o 'dialeto' do latin-jazz. E foram muito bem sucedidos, porque tocam com um vigor, uma raça e 'um groove' que não fica nada a dever aos originais. SENSACIONAL!
